On-field salary: 100 million US dollars

Off-field salary: $6 million

Former Real Madrid player Karim Benzema has been under contract with Ittihad FC in the Saudi Professional League since 2023. The footballer is originally from France and was born in Lyon. Benzema is said to have had personal reasons for his move to Saudi Arabia: “I want to go there because it is important for me to be in a Muslim country where I have the feeling that people already like me,” said the professional footballer in an interview in June.

With his new contract, the player has a salary of $100 million for the 2023/24 season. There is also an additional $6 million from advertising contracts.

Ranking of the highest paid professional footballers

Which football players earn the most? This is regularly examined Forbes business magazine. It turns out that the top earners among professional footballers are in Saudi Arabia. The current ranking comes to the conclusion that half of the top earners now play in the Saudi Professional League. Two other players are under contract with clubs owned by investor groups from Qatar or Abu Dhabi.

In the 2023/24 season, Cristiano Ronaldo is at the top with the most earnings. Forbes estimates it at around $260 million, of which $200 million comes from his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. His contract is believed to include not only player salaries but also financial incentives through commercial agreements. According to the business magazine, the remaining 60 million mainly result from advertising contracts and sponsorship contracts with well-known brands such as Nike.

Cristiano Ronaldo at the top for the sixth time

This is the sixth time Cristiano Ronaldo has topped the list of highest-paid footballers in the past ten years. His only competitors are Lionel Messi (2018, 2019 and 2020) and Kylian Mbappé (2022). In 2023, Messi is in second place with about $135 million. Although his move to the USA meant less salary, the Messi brand was able to gain a lot of reach as a result. His off-field earnings are about $5 million more than his playing salary.

Of the top eight players, only Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain), Erling Haaland (Manchester City) and Mohammed Salah (Liverpool FC) are still in action in Europe.

This means that the eleven highest-paid football players earn a total of almost a billion US dollars in the current season. That’s an increase of about 53 percent compared to last year.

These footballers will earn the most money in 2023:

Cristiano Ronaldo at $260 million Lionel Messi at $135 million Neymar Jr. at $112 million Kylian Mbappé at $110 million Karim Benzema at $106 million Erling Haaland at $58 million Mohamed Salah at $53 million, Sadio Mané at $52 million, Kevin De Bruyne at $39 million

Harry Kane with $36 million, Robert Lewandowski with $34 million
