There was a moment that the IOC were very worried about: very few countries in the world in fact wanted to host the Olympic Games, especially the winter ones. But now times have changed, there is the race for the Olympics. Furthermore, Giovanni Malagò never resigned himself to Mayor Raggi’s renunciation of the candidacy for the Rome 2024 Games and is still convinced that we would have won (but, as we know, he is an incurable optimist). The 2024 Olympics went, as we know, in Paris. The 2028 ones will be held in Los Angeles and the 2032 ones in Brisbane, Australia, Gold Coast. Now there is the race for the 2036 edition. Barcelona has also got involved. The sports councilor of the Catalan city, David Escudé, wants to repeat the historic event of 1992, which marked a turning point. “The Olympic flame always burns, we are ready for the 2036 edition but also for those of 2040 and 2044…” explained Escudé. Meanwhile, the renovated Camp Nou will host the final of the 2030 football World Cup, thus beating competition from the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
Returning to the 2036 Summer Games, in addition to Barcelona, there are also expressions of interest from Santiago de Chile, Istanbul, Nusantara (new capital of Indonesia) and Doha (Qatar) which has already hosted the Football World Cup of 2022. India had also made a bid for the 2036 edition but now the NOC, the Indian National Olympic Committee, is in trouble, amid accusations of constitutional violations and financial mismanagement, so much so that the IOC has suspended funding .
