Upon arrival at the La Misericordia cultural center, Doña Letizia, who is a great cinephile, stopped for a few minutes to talk with the actress Irene Escolar, who was sitting next to Pablo Simón, a political scientist and professor at the Carlos III University of Madrid. During their meeting, both exchanged laughter and expressions of affection. The Madrid interpreter, a member of the Gutiérrez Caba clan, enthusiastically greeted the Queen. Doña Letizia, for her part, was also very kind to the protagonist of the film The girls are fine by Itsaso Arana, who received a special mention at the closing of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest 2023 for his way of dealing with universal themes.

The Queen met Escolar four years agowhen he went with Don Felipe to the Pavón Theater to see sisters, the play that the Madrid actress performed with Bárbara Lennie. Once the performance was over, both entered the dressing room to congratulate the protagonists of this story written by the French playwright Pascal Rambert expressly for them. “She was beautiful, he is very tall, he almost ran into the roof of Pavón, which is very low,” Lennie recalled in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Doña Letizia told us that she wanted to read the text. She spoke of the physical effort, it shows that she takes care of herself, and she asked Irene and me how we had prepared ourselves,” she added.

Doña Letizia is passionate about the performing arts and whenever she can, she escapes from the Palace to enjoy the cultural offer of Madrid with the King and his daughters or with her friends. She also usually takes advantage of her stay in Palma to go to the cinema or the theater. In 2019, for example, she went to the cinema to see The Lion King with the princess of Asturias, the infanta Leonor and Doña Sofía. That same year, she also went to the theater with her daughters and her mother-in-law to see Swan Lake.

At 34 years old, Irene Escolar triumphs as an actress. In 2016, she won the Goya for Best New Actress for her role in autumn in berlin, first feature by Lara Izaguirre. With the prize still undigested, he got into the skin of Juana I of Castilla in the film the broken crownby Jordi Frades. “It has been quite a challenge because it had been done very well on previous occasions, with Pilar López de Ayala and Aurora Bautista; they were two great references, the bar was very high,” she said at the time. “As I investigated this woman, I really wanted to tell her true story, what happened to her in a period of history that has been told very little, it seemed very important to me to dignify the image of this woman,” she stressed.

Granddaughter of Irene Gutiérrez Caba and, therefore, great-niece of Emilio and Julia Gutiérrez Caba, Escolar is considered the great theater actress of her generation. In September she will return to Madrid’s Teatro de la Abadía to represent the play Finland with Israel Elejalde, and soon we will be able to see her in the series the long shadowsfrom Disney+, a powerful female thriller that reflects on the weight of guilt and how the friendship of a group of friends evolves over the years.
