Breastfeeding creates a special bond and habit for mother and child. Thus making the weaning process often not easy to go through.

It’s not only hard for the mother, because we also have to understand the psychological changes in the child after weaning so that it doesn’t make the child feel lost or anxious because he doesn’t breastfeed his mother anymore.

The weaning process is often emotionally and mentally draining for Mothers as parents. But children also feel the same way, Mother. There is a psychological impact on children after weaning. The impact can be positive or negative, depending on how Mother weans.

Let’s discuss the psychological changes in children after weaning.

The positive and negative effects of weaning

Internationally certified lactation consultant, Angie Mann Natero, says that there are both positive and negative impacts of weaning. It all depends on how Mother weans your little one.

If the weaning process is carried out in a calm and positive manner, the psychological impact will also be good. Mothers are advised not to force children to be able to wean them.

“In my opinion, ideally, weaning is a natural, gradual, and mutually desired process,” Angie told Romper.

From her personal experience, Angie says that while she was caring for her three children, ages 6, 12, and 15, none of them really remembered breastfeeding. This is because the weaning process is natural and has a positive impact.

This was also said by another internationally certified lactation consultant, Tori Sproat. She weans her children gently and naturally so there are no negative side effects from the process.

It’s different when Mother forces the baby to wean too much.

“Forced weaning to a specific schedule can have a negative effect on the relationship because both parents and children are dealing with that psychological and emotional process,” says Tori.

However, you need to remember that all children handle things differently. So, as long as you try to reduce the pressure associated with the weaning process and do it gently from time to time, it should reduce any negative effects that may arise.

When is the best time to wean?

Collect Mayo Clinics, American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months after birth and breastfeeding in combination with solid foods until at least 1 year of age. Breastfeeding is recommended as long as Mother and baby want it.

The best time to start weaning your child is a personal decision. It’s often easiest to start weaning when the baby starts the process.
Changes in breastfeeding patterns that lead to weaning often begin naturally at 6 months of age, when solid foods are introduced. Some children begin to seek other forms of nutrition and comfort around 1 year of age.

At this age, children usually eat a variety of solid foods and can drink from a glass. Other children may not start weaning until they are toddlers, when they refuse to sit still during feedings.

Weaning can take days, weeks, or months. Even after you have successfully weaned your baby from breastfeeding, you may continue to breastfeed in the morning or before bed to maintain a sense of closeness as mother and child.
