Dr. Reda Al-Ghamrawi, former director of the Abbasiya Mental Health Hospital, said that what is happening in Gaza now in terms of attacks and bombings on civilians is an issue that has dangerous psychological effects on the Palestinian people of all categories.

Dr. Reda Al-Ghamrawi, former director of the Mental Health Hospital in Abbasiya, added in statements to “Youm Seven” that the events taking place in Gaza currently have immediate and future psychological effects. The immediate psychological effects are depression, anxiety, general terror, and the creation of a spirit of hostility toward others.

He continued: As for the future psychological effects, the different groups will be exposed to schizophrenia and depression, especially since everyone sees relatives being killed in front of a sample, adding that the attacks that occur on vital facilities in the Gaza Strip, especially hospitals and field hospitals, increase the psychological distress of the people. He continued: It is possible for children to become infected with urination. Involuntary – nail biting – fear – night terrors – shyness – introversion – crises – speech disorders – aggressive behavior – lack of concentration and distraction.

Dr. Reda Al-Ghamrawi pointed out that this requires a psychological rehabilitation program that may take years for a person, especially children, to return to normal, adding that the program must include intense psychological and behavioral activity in order for the recovery rates to be satisfactory. He continued: The matter requires a great effort and the response will be difficult.

He continued: The war this time is different from previous times, as it has left great traces of devastation and destruction, and it has also caused very great damage to the psychological behavior of society, due to the high numbers of victims and wounded and tens of thousands of destroyed homes. He continued: The more the violence increases, the worse it gets and the higher the post-traumatic stress rates.

He added: The forms of psychological conditions in children as a result of the war that will be discovered and dealt with, such as (bedwetting, nail biting, fear, night terrors, shyness, introversion, crises, speech disorders, aggressive behavior, lack of concentration and distraction).
