The PSOE Loses Absolute Majority in Nijar’s Municipal Elections, PP Gains Ground

The PSOE has been the most voted list, but has been left behind a councilor of the absolute majority of this legislature. Esperanza Pérez Felices, mayor in the last two terms, will give up the baton of command to José Francisco Garrido Requena, mayor of the PP, if he gets the support of María del Pilar Fenoy Nieto, the only representative that Vox has obtained.

The PSOE has won the elections but not with a sufficient majority. The difference in votes between socialists and popular has been reduced to only 331 votes, with 3,980 votes for the former and 44.36% compared to the 3,649 votes that the PP has achieved and 40.67%.

The socialists There are 425 votes left of the 4,405 votes that 11 councilors gave him and absolute majority in 2019. While the popular They have achieved 1,175 more votes than in 2019 who have given it representation of 10 councilors, four more than four years ago.

Thus, Esperanza Pérez Felices, the first socialist mayor in the democratic history of Nijar in 2015, in the fourth largest town in the province, has not been able retain the absolute majority it held in this last legislature and the PSOE loses one of the historical fiefdoms in the Levante of Almería where he governed for seven terms with Joaquín García Fernández when the PP took the mayor’s office from him with Antonio Jesús Rodríguez who was mayor for eight years between the 2007/11 and 2011/2015 legislatures.

The PP fell apart in 2019, losing four councillors, while Vox, debutant in these elections, removed 3 councilors and now has lost two. With Andalusia, a confluence of IU and Podemos, it has lost the councilor it had and is left without representation for the first time.
