The PSOE and the Asturian | BE Gijón | The Window of Asturias

It took five presidents of the Principality and three general secretaries of the FSA for the party that held power in the region for the longest years (by far), the PSOE, to include the Asturian’s official status in its electoral program. Pedro de Silva, Juan Luis Rodríguez Vigil, Antonio Trevín, Vicente Álvarez Areces and Javier Fernández were always unfavorable in giving official recognition to llingua. The same happened with Suso Sanjurjo and Luis Martínez Noval, as well as Javier Fernández, when they led the Asturian Socialist Federation.

Probably of the same opinion as his predecessors in office was Adrián Barbón, but unlike them he did not want, did not know or could not get his party not to remove such a thorny issue. It happened in October 2017, in the last Congress of the FSA, when a proposal came forward that included the official status of the Asturian and the Eonaviego in the electoral program.

In the last 40 years the Socialists have always remained indifferent to the language. There was only one advance on this, in 1998, the law for the use and promotion of Asturian, but it was carried out by the Government of the right chaired by Sergio Marqués, who did so at the request of the Asturianist and former socialist Xuan Xosé Sánchez.

In recent weeks it seems that Adrián Barbón has lowered his drive in defense of the officers. Thus, for example, last Saturday he stopped the rush of Podemos and IU: the votes of the left do not add up to take the proposal forward in the General Meeting, he said. Then, yesterday, he announced that the PSOE will not vote on a reform of the Statute of Autonomy that only includes co-officiality, in addition to stating that there will “never” be bilingual training in Asturian.

Meanwhile IU now defends holding a referendum at the end of the parliamentary process. Obviously something is going on behind the scenes.
