The State Attorney General’s Office made public a file with documents related to the case ‘Meeting’which investigates an alleged corruption plot within the government of the former president Guillermo Lasso (2021-2023).
Documents include text messages from deceased businessman Ruben Cherreswho was close to Danilo Carrera, Lasso’s brother-in-law. Carrera is one of the seven defendants in the court case and is under house arrest. You can access the file revealed by the Prosecutor’s Office through the following link.
Text messages from Cherres, who was murdered in March 2023, mention individuals such as Danilo Carrera and Cesar Mongea political ally of Lasso who died of cancer in 2021. In the conversations, businesses such as the investment in a refinery and discussions about positions in the Ministry of energy.
The ‘Encuentro’ case was born in January 2023 after a journalistic investigation by the digital media La Posta, which reported on alleged corruption in the Government of Guillermo Lasso. That same year, opposition legislators mentioned alleged corruption as a reason to push for impeachment against the then president, who responded by dissolving the National Assembly through a constitutional mechanism.
Andersson Boscanthe journalist behind the report that led to ‘Encuentro’, is currently investigated by Ecuadorian authorities for his relations with the drug trafficker Leandro Norero. Boscán and Norero had conversations through text messages, which have been analyzed by the Prosecutor’s Office as part of the anti-corruption operation. ‘Metastasis’which investigates the infiltration of organized crime within the Ecuadorian State.
