The Inspectorate for the Human Environment and Transport and Environmental Services inspected the site of steelmaker Tata Steel in IJmuiden on Tuesday. The investigation is conducted by the Public Prosecutor (OM). The parties want to obtain more information on the steelmaking process and the operation of the coke and gas plants.
During the ongoing inspection and investigation, the research team examines whether Tata Steel IJmuiden BV has deliberately and illegally introduced harmful substances into the soil, air or surface water. These substances could be harmful to health.
The same investigative team examines the production processes and operation of some factories within the Tata Steel project.
The so-called inspection is related to the criminal investigation into Tata Steel that began in early February. More than 1,100 people and organizations have filed complaints against the steel company. The investigation is currently in full swing.
According to lawyer Bénédicte Ficq, who made the statement, Tata Steel endangers the health of local residents. Whether he will actually be prosecuted will be decided on the basis of the ongoing investigation.
Tata Steel says in a brief response that it “will fully cooperate with the investigation”.
