The prosecutor’s office is organizing a conference on “Judicial reform. Specialized justice” next week in House 2 of the Boyana residence. The leadership of the prosecution is among the zealous defenders of the thesis that specialized justice should exist and this is expected to be stated during the conference, which will be held days after the start of the new 47th National Assembly. All four parties currently negotiating a coalition government have request for special justice reform. In the short-lived two parliaments, bills have been tabled to close special justice, but there is no time to pass them. There is no information in the announcement for the conference who will participate in it. According to “Sega”, among the invited is the caretaker Minister of Justice Ivan Demerdzhiev.
In April, when there was again a danger of closing the special justice system, Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev personally led the protests in his defense.
According to Geshev, the closure of special justice is unacceptable political pressure and attempts through urgent lobbying “legislation” to destroy the most effective and efficient structures for combating organized crime, corruption and crimes under Chapter I of the Penal Code (mainly espionage and terrorism) are not interest of the Bulgarian citizens “.
This will not be the first Boyana event organized by the prosecutor’s office. In August 2020 Geshev held a national meeting there because of the “risk of a serious breach of the rule of law.”
The low efficiency of specialized justice was confirmed by the analysis of the topic prepared by the Ministry of Justice in the summer. The then caretaker Minister Yanaki Stoilov initiated it as part of the debate on the closure of specialized structures, as The Supreme Judicial Council refused to make the analysis in a short time.
