The plans for section B of the Fulda-Main line from Dipperz to Bergrheinfeld are becoming more concrete. Grid operator Tennet has presented its proposed corridor for the “P 43” high-voltage power line, which runs through the Fulda southern district and Sinntal.

Fulda region – The route that Tennet is taking a closer look at for the Fulda-Main line is a good kilometer wide. This leads from Dipperz past Künzell, via Eichenzell, Neuhof, Kalbach, Schlüchtern and Sinntal to Lower Franconia. “After testing the corridor network, this variant turned out to be the most compatible for people, the environment and nature,” explains Tennet press spokesman Thomas Wagner.

Among other things, existing lines and traffic arteries, environmental protection, buildings and development plans of cities and municipalities were taken into account. Information that participants in the information markets had put forward a good year ago were also taken into account. According to this test, the routes running further east through the Rhön and Lower Franconia proved to be less suitable than “Line A”.

This also applies to the ten kilometer shorter “String B”, which would have run along the A 7 and was temporarily considered the preferred option. In addition to the community of Ebersburg, this would have affected the Kalbach districts of Uttrichshausen and Heubach as well as the eastern Sinntal. According to Wagner, there is a bottleneck right near Uttrichshausen that represents the biggest sticking point in “Line B”.

In Bad Brückenau, a water protection area in which no structures – including masts – are permitted due to the Water Protection Ordinance, represents an exclusion criterion. In addition, underground cabling is not possible in the Bad Bocklet area because of the healing springs.

The Tennet spokesman describes the Fulda-Main line as a pilot project for underground cabling. This will be tested between Dipperz and Künzell up to the A 66 near Eichenzell and in the last section between Werneck and Bergrheinfeld.

There is also another new piece of news for Dipperz – more precisely for Wisselsrod: the expansion of the substation will only be half as large as previously planned. This is what Fulda member of the Bundestag Michael Brand reported from a conversation on Wednesday with Tennet, in which state parliament member Sebastian Müller (both CDU) also took part.

Deadline

An information evening at which interested parties can talk directly to specialist planners from Tennet will take place on Wednesday, October 18th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the community center in Rothemann.

“The discussions over the last few weeks in Berlin have led to an initial success when the planned expansion is now 50 percent smaller and underground cabling is also being implemented here. And of course, as soon as the concrete documents are available, we will look at the plans very closely with those responsible for the municipality,” explains Brand.

Essential parts of the line itself should be routed above ground, but bundled with existing lines and traffic routes. Specifically, the network operator means the masts and cables near Hattenhof, from where the corridor will then lead along the Hanover – Fulda – Würzburg express railway line to Zeitlofs.

South of the Lower Franconian market town, the plans envisage bundling with the Sannerz-Rimpar gas pipeline, and then from Gemünden am Main to Bergrheinfeld with an existing Tennet pipeline coming from Frankfurt.

Even if we as network operators submit a preferred variant as a proposal, that does not mean that it will be implemented in this way.

In the next step, the network operator will submit its plans to the Federal Network Agency as the approving authority. Then comes the disclosure, during which municipalities, associations and citizens’ initiatives can submit submissions about the project. “These will be discussed at a discussion meeting – probably at the beginning of 2024,” announces the Tennet spokesman.

However, he admits: “Even if we as network operators submit a preferred variant as a proposal, that does not mean that it will be implemented in this way. The Federal Network Agency can also make a different decision. So the residents on the A7 can’t completely sit back and relax yet.”

Rückblick

Last year, the transmission system operator Tennet invited people to information markets – including in Petersberg and Sinntal-Sterbfritz. At that time, residents from the Rhön, the southern Fulda district and the eastern Main-Kinzig district expressed concerns and dissatisfaction.

Infomarket participants from the Rhön were afraid of the high masts and emphasized: “Such a huge cable, there is no way to get to the farm and the forest without it!” In contrast to the Uttrichshäuser, they preferred bundling along the motorway. Meanwhile, people in the Kalbach district spoke out vehemently against it. This was already excessively burdened by the motorway, and the power line would then represent excessive bundling or overburdening. The Uttrichshausen mayor, Volker Röbig, had criticized at the time that, in his opinion, topography, residential development, nature conservation concerns and other burdens had not been taken into account enough in the planning.

Just like their neighbors from Heubach, the Uttrichshäuser referred to the airfield between the Kalbach districts, which was protected. A crossbar that was re-inspected a year ago could have run along here. According to the Federal Network Agency’s specifications, this would also have been possible for Hattenhof. Here, residents of the Neuhof district objected that archaeological monuments and black stork populations on the Rippberg would be affected.

In Sterbfritz, the people of Sinntal argued against the management with agriculture and their unique cultural landscape. They feared that the high masts would destroy the natural landscape and that the underground cabling would have a negative impact on agricultural yields.

From 2031, the Fulda–Main line will connect the Mecklar and Dipperz substations with the Bergrheinfeld/West substation over a length of around 130 kilometers. The city of Hünfeld, which is located in section A (to Dipperz) of the 380 kV alternating current line, recently lodged an objection against the plans – because of “very high and high spatial resistances”.

At the beginning of 2023, Tennet determined which corridor should be built in the northern section of the planned Fulda-Main high-voltage line.
