Mikel Bermejo could not believe what he found in a recent monologue in Lekeitio. At one point, this popular 33-year-old comedian from San Sebastian asked for a general round of applause from those spectators who had a strange first name. This was done by a woman who later discovered that her name was Ostaizka, just like her friend, Gorosti, who even invited the comedian to translate it into English as Holly. The straw that broke the camel’s back was Neskur, a woman who translated her name in Basque as ‘water girl’. The comedian, now at a loss for words, opted to use his great sense of humour to get out of the situation. “You’re a Pokemon!” he joked, which generated general laughter in the auditorium.

Mikel Bermejo interacted with his audience again in a recent performance in Lekeitio, in the same way he does in each of his ‘Tikismikis’ shows and, soon, ‘Eureka’. In them, the comedian from Guipuzcoa usually brings out his most mischievous side to talk about everyday situations that affect us all, from those moments of discomfort that one experiences when one hears two colleagues in the middle of an intimate relationship to the cumbersome situation that involves being fired from work.

Strange names in Basque

The challenge she posed to her audience this time was easy: they had to applaud only those who had a strange first name. And the massive response she received surprised Mikel Bermejo himself. “The first time so many people applauded,” he admitted before beginning the round of questions. “What is your name?” he asked: Ostaizka. The woman explained that her name had no meaning whatsoever, so her friend invited her not to play along: a serious mistake, she herself got into trouble. “Her name is Gorosti,” Ostaizka herself revealed. And logically she was forced to explain herself: “In English it is prettier, my name is Holly,” she assured. Bermejo could not believe it, so he opted to bring out his most ironic side: “Holly? Angelina Hollye?” The joke generated another burst of laughter in the Lekeitio auditorium.

The laughter continued with Ostaizka’s sister, who said her name was Isturiz. And Mikel Bermejo could not hold back any longer and started laughing again. “So your parents annoyed you all the same…” The funniest moment came when a woman said her name was Neskur. The comedian from Guipuzcoa, surprised, asked her what it meant… and was perplexed by the answer: ‘water girl’. It was then that Mikel Bermejo saw the light and understood the real reason for the girl’s given name: “You’re a Pokemon!” he revealed. His exit generated a round of applause.
