The Progressive Party urges South Korean government to file complaint over Fukushima contaminated water discharge

Progressive Party Urges South Korean Government to File Complaint Against Japan for Discharging Contaminated Water from Fukushima

The Progressive Party has called on the South Korean government to file a complaint with the International Court of Law of the Sea regarding the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Progressive Party Standing Representative Yoon Hee-sook and Rep. Kang Seong-hee held a press conference at the National Assembly today to address the issue.

During the press conference, Yoon Hee-sook expressed anger towards Japan for considering the cheapest method of disposing of the contaminated water through marine dumping. She stated, “Even though there are alternative treatment methods such as storing the radioactively contaminated water on land or burying it underground, Japan’s decision to dump it into the sea is a global disaster waiting to happen.”

Yoon and Kang argued that Japan’s dumping of contaminated water violates the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and directly affects the global marine ecosystem. They emphasized that it is necessary and appropriate for South Korea to file a complaint against Japan in order to protect the marine environment.

Yoon also criticized the South Korean government for not taking immediate action against Japan’s plans. She expressed astonishment at the government’s lack of response and accused them of treating people’s concerns as “ghost stories.” Yoon further criticized the government for assuming the role of the Japanese government’s “mouth” and not standing up for the interests of the South Korean people.

In response to the situation, Yoon announced that the Progressive Party will mobilize citizens who care about the safety of children’s food and the protection of the environment. She stated, “The Progressive Party will create a ‘sea of candlelight’ with all common sense citizens who think about the earth and the future of our children.”

The issue of Japan’s discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant has been a contentious one, with concerns raised about the potential impact on the marine ecosystem and public health. The Progressive Party’s call for South Korea to file a complaint with the International Court of Law of the Sea reflects growing concerns and the need for international action to address this issue.

What legal recourse can South Korea seek against Japan for its violation of international environmental standards

Atment methods available, Japan is taking the easy way out by discharging the contaminated water into the ocean. This is a blatant violation of international environmental standards and poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.”

Yoon further emphasized that South Korea has a responsibility to protect its citizens and the environment from this potential disaster. She urged the government to take immediate action by filing a complaint with the International Court of Law of the Sea, seeking legal recourse against Japan for its actions.

Rep. Kang Seong-hee also highlighted the potential consequences of Japan’s decision, stating, “The discharge of this contaminated water could have far-reaching effects, not only on our coastal areas but also on the livelihoods of our fishermen and the health of our people. We cannot allow Japan to disregard the well-being of neighboring countries.”

The Progressive Party’s call for legal action comes after Japan recently announced its plans to release the treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean starting in 2023. The decision has been met with criticism from various countries, including China and Taiwan, who have expressed concerns over the potential environmental and health implications.

South Korea has previously raised its concerns with Japan through diplomatic channels, but the Progressive Party believes that a stronger step needs to be taken to hold Japan accountable for its actions.

The party hopes that by filing a complaint with the International Court of Law of the Sea, it can not only bring attention to the issue but also pressure Japan to reconsider its plan of action and explore safer alternatives for disposing of the contaminated water.

Yoon concluded the press conference by urging the South Korean government to act swiftly and decisively. She stated, “We cannot afford to ignore this issue any longer. South Korea must take a firm stance and protect the interests of its people and the environment. We urge the government to file a complaint as soon as possible and ensure that Japan is held accountable for its actions.”
