The program Together We Paint Acapulco begins

The Ministries of Welfare and the Interior (Segob), as well as the government of the state of Guerrero, announced the official start of the Juntos Pintamos Acapulco program, in which together with residents of the port and Coyuca de Benítez they will paint for free the facades of 300 thousand homes affected by the passage of Hurricane Otis, as well as intervene in public spaces with the creation of murals by Guerrero artists.

Ariadna Montiel Reyes, head of the Welfare Secretariat, reported that within the framework of the general reconstruction and support plan for the population affected by Hurricane Otis in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez, public consultations were held to select the color palette for the painting of houses, and 250 community meetings were held to select the color with which they would paint their facades, as well as previous tasks.
For this program, more than seven million liters of paint were purchased, as well as almost two million liters of sealant, brushes, rollers, felts and others, with an investment of 857.4 million pesos.

He recalled that the Mexican Government has been present from the very beginning and, 10 months after the hurricane, a thousand Welfare Brigades are being organized with the participation of six thousand public servants and Youth Building the Future to work together with the inhabitants of these municipalities to give color and a new face to Acapulco.

“Our conviction is to be close to the people when they need us, that has kept us here, living in a camp since October of last year in Chilpancingo; the president’s instruction was not to separate from Acapulco until there were conditions of well-being, at least since the day before the hurricane and here we are still; we will complete this task by the end of September to fulfill this task and the commitment of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador,” he said.
Montiel Reyes, the head of the Ministry of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde Luján, and the governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, led the official launch of the Juntos Pintamos Acapulco program at the Rotunda of Illustrious Men and Women of Guerrero.

Mayor Luján recalled what happened in the early hours of Wednesday, October 25 of last year after the passage of Category 5 Hurricane Otis along the southern coast of the Mexican Pacific, which caused serious damage to the ports of Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez, until today, August 22, 2024, the date on which this program begins.

“We have finally reached one of the most beautiful stages, which is Juntos Pintemos Acapulco, which has to do with that: with understanding that hope, solidarity, and resilience are also born from tragedy, and that it shows what we are as the people of Mexico. This project will bring color and light to this beautiful port; we are all going to collaborate, especially the Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro, who I have a special affection for because I had the opportunity to start this project as head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.”

He stressed that with the participation of the people it was possible to move forward. He reported that more than 35 thousand million pesos have been invested in the general reconstruction plan and support for the population, “because of course there are resources when the high officials do not steal the money, of course there is solidarity among our people, because it must also be said: businessmen and many people began to support as they have always done.”

He explained that before, when there was a disaster, the Segob had a fund that the government of the Fourth Transformation disappeared, called the National Fund for Natural Disasters (Fonden), which had many resources, but with which “they rubbed their hands to be able to say: emergency, because there they could do big business and in the Government they bought the supplies, they agreed with the governors and, with intermediaries, they began to distribute a little and steal everything. And we saw it in many disasters here, but throughout the country it was taken advantage of to do big business and in the end absolutely nothing ever reached the people.”

Governor Salgado Pineda thanked the Government of Mexico for its support in the rebirth of Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez, “Guerrero has been transformed from the ground up, thanks to the humanistic policy promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”
He highlighted the work of the nation’s servants from all over the country, and of the Young People Building the

Future that supported to raise the face of these municipalities, and now they will help to paint the streets and homes of Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez, as well as Guerrero muralist artists who joined to paint murals in public spaces and build collective memory through art, in addition to promoting values such as resilience.

The event was also attended by: the head of the Interinstitutional Liaison Unit of the Ministry of Welfare, Oscar del Cueto Garcia; the head of the Unit for Attention to Priority Groups, Alvaro Zavala Cano; the federal delegate of Programs for Development in Guerrero, Ivan Hernandez Diaz; the municipal president of Acapulco de Juarez, Abelina Lopez Rodriguez; artist Gerzain Vargas Vargas; authorities of the armed forces, beneficiaries of the program and public servants.
