The program of Liepaja International Star Festival is announced

The Liepāja International Star Festival, organized by the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra (LSO), will take place from March 4 to 12, and will bring together outstanding musicians of various genres in five concerts this year, and premieres of compositions are also expected.

According to LSO representatives, on March 4 at 7 pm the anniversary of the festival will be opened on the big stage of the concert hall “Lielais dzintars” by LSO itself, which together with well-known soloists as an organist Iveta Apkalna, pianists Reinis Zariņš and flutists Dita Krenberga in the premiere of Arthur Muscat’s Triple Concert “Childhood Church Stained Glass and Summer Butterflies”.

The program conducted by Gunta Kuzma will also feature Johann Sebastian Bach’s Piano Concerto, Frank Marten’s Ballad for Flute, as well as Paul Hindemit’s Chamber Music for Organ, where the soloists of the concert will be able to enjoy the solo.

On March 5, at 6 pm, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) will perform on the festival stage in the concert hall “Lielais dzintars”. This concert will also be special in that the Andris Dzenitis Symphony will premiere.

On the 6th of March, at 6 pm, an evening of piano music is expected at the festival. The world-renowned Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov will delight the audience with Claude Debussy’s Preludes and Hector Berlioz’s “Fantastic” Symphony in the piano transcription of Ferenc Liszt.

The prestigious British string quartet “Albion Quartet” will visit the “Great Amber” chamber hall named after Dzintars Jurgelaitis with a special concert program in the continuation of the festival on March 10 at 7 p.m. The concert will feature music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonin Dvorak and Jāzeps Vītols.

Finally, on March 12, at 6 pm, Gintars Rinkevičs will perform at the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra’s conductor’s stand, and at the closing concert of the anniversary festival, guests will enjoy an opera program from the world’s most famous opera composers, including Giuseppe Verdi, Georges Bizet and Kamila Sensans.

Imants Resnis, the former artistic director of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, once started the Liepāja International Star Festival in 1993 as the International Piano Festival. Around 200 pianists from all over the world have performed at the festival.

Since 2016, when Liepaja Symphony Orchestra housed in the concert hall “Big Amber”, the festival is reborn in a wider format, attracting both pianists and outstanding singers and virtuosos of other instruments, and the list of stars of the festival can also add such names as Misha Maiskis, Gidon Kremer, “Carion Quintet”, Iveta Apkalna, Alexander Antonenko and many others.
