Since 1991, Maris Skuja has been the concertmaster of the second largest Austrian opera house – the Graz Opera, from 2001 to 2017 – the main concertmaster, but since 2002 – also the director of the opera studio. He has been a rehearsal at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen, the Cologne Opera House, the Trondheim and Giessen Theater, and the Estonian National Opera. Since 1997, he has regularly worked as a pianist and assistant conductor in the production of the Bregenz Opera Festival. Māris Skuja graduated from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in the composition class of Ādolfs Skulte and Arvīds Žilinska in the piano class. For 16 years he was the chief concertmaster and assistant to conductor Rihards Glasups at the Latvian National Opera (then the LSSR State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater).

Thanks to more than 45 years of activity in opera houses, Māra Skuja’s active repertoire includes more than 100 operas, a large number of oratorios, cantatas and operettas. His extensive knowledge of opera drama and the specifics of vocal art has been appreciated by singers both in Latvia and abroad. Currently, Māris Skuja is also promoting the vocal growth of many soloists of the Latvian National Opera. In addition to his duties in theaters, he has started active pianist-concertmaster concert activities immediately after graduation, and has now performed thousands of concerts, television shows and competitions. Active cooperation has been established with bass baritone Egils Siliņš; 90 concerts have been held together, as well as three CDs have been recorded.
