The Program for Assessment, Treatment and Research for Perpetrators of Sexual Assault (PETRAAS)

The Assessment, Treatment and Research Program for Perpetrators of Sexual Assault (PETRAAS) has been in place since May 2010 at the Percé Detention Establishment (EDP). PETRAAS is short, intensive, followed on a voluntary basis and focused on the acquisition of skills and competencies in order to reduce the risk of recidivism. It aims to improve the quality of the inmate’s personal and social life.

Lasting 6 months, this program is aimed at men who are serving a sentence of less than 2 years in one of the 18 provincial detention centers for having committed one or more crimes of a sexual nature. At the end of the program, the participant returns to their original detention establishment in order to continue their process of social reintegration.

PETRAAS is a unique initiative in Quebec, born from a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Health and Social Services. The program is implemented by the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of Gaspésie. It is part of the mandate of the EDP, namely to ensure the custody and supervision of inmates in compliance with the Act respecting the Quebec correctional system.
