A student was beaten by security forces during a raid on a school in Iran and killed. Fifteen-year-old Azra Panahi died. The incident took place at Ardabil’s Shahed Girls High School on October 13. Security forces asked school children to sing pro-government songs. When they refused, the soldiers beat the students.
According to a statement by the Coordination Committee of the teachers’ union, Azra Panahi, seriously injured in the beating of the soldiers, died while being treated. There was a huge protest in the country. There have also been calls for the resignation of Iranian Minister of Education Yusuf Nouri. Raveena Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Human Rights Office, said there have been reports of 23 children killed and many injured in incidents related to hijab protests in seven provinces.
Meanwhile, Iranian military officials have denied responsibility for the teenager’s death. Azra’s relative released a statement on state television stating that he died of congenital heart disease. Women have been protesting in Iran for about a month regarding the hijab. The protests began in Iran after the death last month of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on suspicion of violating the country’s strict rules on wearing the hijab.
