The price of diesel drops by more than 12 cents in a week, now as expensive as gasoline | Economy

The price for a liter of diesel fell by 12.4 cents in one week. As a result, fuel is again as expensive as gasoline. This is evident from data from the UnitedConsumers consumer collective.

The average recommended retail price of both fuels is € 2,120 on Thursday. That’s considerably lower for diesel than earlier this month, when you paid € 2,265 for a liter. Over the same period, the price of gasoline fell by only 3.2 cents.

Paul van Selms of UnitedConsumers suspects that the reduction in the price of diesel has something to do with the impending boycott of Russian oil. That oil is often used to make diesel, but a partial ban on imports of Russian crude oil will apply in the EU from 5 December.

Van Selms thinks many companies have already responded to this in recent months. This has led to higher prices. Now that companies are ready for a boycott, the price of diesel is returning to a more normal level. He expects diesel to be even cheaper than gasoline soon.

This was also the case in the past, but diesel has become more expensive since the end of August. This is because Russian oil has become increasingly scarce and therefore more expensive as a result of the war in Ukraine. This has raised the price of diesel.

The question is whether the diesel driver will immediately benefit from this. Many gas station companies have recently had to buy expensive diesels. They want to get rid of it before they sell the cheapest diesel. “But I expect diesel to be as expensive as gasoline at most gas stations next week and even cheaper after that,” says Van Selms.
