Jakarta –
Electric cars are considered capable of reducing pollution to dependence on imported fuel. But according to Niko Questera, a former Tesla engineer from Indonesia, the price of electric cars in the country does not make sense.
As is known, Indonesia is incessantly campaigning for the use of electric cars. Several types of electric cars have been sold, but the prices are not yet friendly to the pockets of most Indonesians.
For example, electric passenger cars in Indonesia are currently sold by Hyundai and Nissan at a level of Rp. 600 million. Meanwhile, the DFSK Minibus has touched the half billion mark.
Tesla itself entered the Indonesian market through general importers. The Brand Holder Agent (APM) has not yet marketed the electric car in Indonesia. Price? translucent above Rp 1 billion.
“We’re moving to a new lifestyle that is ‘simple’ compared to a combustion engine. It’s not possible to have that many parts, how come it’s more expensive. Why are there fewer components, but more expensive? This doesn’t make sense,” he said. he was met at GIIAS 2021, ICE-BSD, Tangerang.
Niko is currently involved in the world of electric vehicles. One of them is by establishing a Quest Motor company.
For almost 10 years, Niko has been in the automotive industry in the United States. He has worked as a Senior Engineer at Stanley Electric, Honda America and Firmware Integration Engineer at Tesla.
According to him, the Indonesian people can massively move to electric vehicles if the price of BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) in Indonesia is in the Low MPV to LSUV price range. This is a fat market for the country’s automotive industry.
“Tesla in America is cheap, here because the taxes (imports) are expensive, there the price is commensurate with the BMW 3 series, the lowest Mercy C Class. So it’s similar (to the price of conventional cars, ed),” he said.
“Here, it should be the same as the Avanza if it’s a car. For a motorbike it has to be worth the Honda BEAT. If the above is not possible, it makes sense for a motorbike player, hobby. It’s a shame that the money is, it’s not illegal to drive a car, a gasoline motorbike,” he said. .
Indeed, one thing that makes it expensive is technology, especially batteries. Some time ago, Chairman I of Gaikindo Jongkie said that electric cars sold in Indonesia were still imported intact from abroad. Even though the incentives for exemption from import duty, PPnBM, and transfer fees have been given, they have not been able to cut prices much.
Indonesia must attract investors from abroad to build domestic component facilities. By increasing the level of domestic components (TKDN) can make the price of this electric car cheaper.
Indonesian people who currently use electric cars are early adapters who have thick pockets.
“Even though there are those who buy (currently electric cars, ed), it is the elite class who want to try new styling. It has also entered but the numbers are not so many,” explained the Director General of the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics Industries ( ILMATE) Ministry of Industry Taufiek Bawazier some time ago.
