The Price of Airless Tires is Estimated to Start at IDR 600 Thousands

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Airless tires made by Michelin will be priced at price US$ 40 to US$ 65 per tire or around Rp. 639 thousand (exchange rate of Rp. 14,202) to Rp. 923 thousand. The target of this tire company is to be available on the market in 2024.

This Michelin product is called the Unique Puncture-proof Tire System (Uptis) which was exclusively developed with General Motors.

This French tire manufacturer claims to have been developing airless tires since 2005.

Besides Michelin, another manufacturer that is also developing airless tires is Bridgestone with a product called QuietTrack.

This product, however, is said to be sold at a higher price, at US$133 per tire, or around Rp. 1.9 million.

Broadly speaking, airless tires are the same as conventional tires, judged by their donut-like shape, black in color, and made of rubber. But the difference is that airless tires are not designed to accommodate air so the design is made hollow on the wall.

The hollow structure functions as a buffer between the tire tread and the rim.

The structure also functions as a shock absorber at the same time, this will help the suspension absorb shock when it hits a pothole or uneven road.

Reported from Clean Technica, Michelin expects the tread of airless tires to last two to three times longer than conventional tires. Because the driver can replace the tread rubber around the outer ring of the tire only if the tire is worn out.

This is different from conventional tires which require all parts of the tire to be replaced when the tread wears out. Thus the driver is said to not need to carry a spare tire during the trip.

Users of airless tires benefit from never having a leak. This tire will also not have problems if it is pierced by nails or other sharp objects because it is designed without air so it is impossible to deflate.

Michelin says about 200 million tires each year end up in landfills prematurely due to tire leaks. Airless tires claim to have a long service life, so they don’t produce a lot of waste, according to reports Motor Biscuit.
