(ANSA) – MONTEVIDEO, OCTOBER 23 – The candidates who will face each other in Sunday’s presidential elections in Uruguay closed their campaign with two well-attended and peaceful rallies. Some 2.7 million Uruguayans will vote to elect the successor to President Luis Lacalle Pou of the center-right National Party, but also to renew their Parliament on October 27. However, there will almost certainly be a run-off on November 24th, as none of the competitors have 50%+1 in their voting intentions, as required by the legislation of the South American country for a winner to be proclaimed. According to the latest poll by the Cifra polling agency released yesterday, Yamandú Orsi, candidate of the centre-left Broad Front and supported by former president José ‘Pepe’ Mujica, enjoys 44% of the vote. He is followed with 23% of the voting intentions by Álvaro Delgado, Lacalle Pou’s protégé and who, in the possible second round, will have the support of the rest of the parties of the government coalition, which would allow him to obtain 43% of the votes according to the latest survey.
