/ world today news/ Uruguay is one of the countries that are geographically farthest from China. However, for many consecutive years, China has been the South American country’s largest trading partner, demonstrating the complementarity between the two countries in terms of economy and trade. Why did Uruguay become one of the first Latin American countries to join the Belt and Road Initiative?
China established diplomatic relations with Uruguay in 1988, and this year marks the 35th anniversary of that occasion. Uruguayan President Luis Lacal Pu, who made his first state visit to China, said that under the Belt and Road Initiative, the two countries have made great progress and fruitful cooperation in the fields of clean energy, economy and trade, cultural and sports cooperation, exchanges in the field of arts and other areas.
“Uruguay has had different governments over the past decade, but they have all maintained the same vision, which is the cornerstone of the development of bilateral relations with China. Although I recognize the differences between the countries, I believe that we have established a cooperative relationship based on complete mutual trust,” added the president.
