President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov announced his intention to give up his post to the young leader. Saturday, February 12 Interfax referring to a representative of the Central Electoral Commission of the republic, he reported that early presidential elections in Turkmenistan were scheduled for March 12.

It is noted that at a meeting of the People’s Council on Friday, Berdymukhammedov, who has been president for 15 years, announced his intention to cede his post to a young leader, leaving only the post of chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty (upper house of parliament) of the country.

Later, he instructed the CEC to begin preparations for holding early presidential elections.

Currently in the government of Turkmenistan the post of vice-premier is occupied by the president’s son Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who has been in charge of the financial and economic complex since July 2021.

According to the Constitution of Turkmenistan, the President is elected for a term of seven years. The next presidential election was to be held in 2024.

As you know, Berdimuhamedov is known for his extraordinary deeds. So, last year he forced all the officials of the country to shave their heads and wear national skullcaps after the declaration of mourning in the country due to the death of his father. Previously in Turkmenistan government employees were banned from dyeing their hair and get a manicure.
