The President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sánchez will evaluate his continuity in the Government after a complaint against his wife – Diario La Página – 2024-04-27 20:56:56

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, put a pause on his official agenda this Wednesday and announced that he will evaluate the continuity of his administration, after the complaints against his wife, Begoña Gómez.

“All of this leads me to tell you that I will continue working but that I will cancel my public agenda, to be able to reflect and decide which path to take,” Sánchez wrote in a public letter that he shared on his X account (formerly Twitter).

Sánchez’s announcement occurs hours after a Madrid court opened preliminary proceedings against Gómez to investigate her relationships with companies that received funds and signed public contracts with the administration led by her husband, as El Confidencial reported this Monday.

The complaint was filed by the far-right organization Clean Hands, which in its statutes defines itself as a union, although no union action is known.

«This attack is unprecedented, it is so serious and so gross that I need to stop and reflect with my wife. Many times we forget that behind politicians there are people. And I, I am not ashamed to say it, I am a man deeply in love with my wife who lives helplessly with the mud that is spread on her day in and day out,” he said.

Sánchez justified his decision to notify the Spaniards through a letter, in view of “the seriousness of the attacks” that both he and his wife have received, and the need for “a calm response.”

Likewise, he stressed that the complaint by Manos Liminas – an organization that he called an “extreme right-wing organization” – is based on “alleged information” disseminated by media from that same ideological spectrum that, according to him, has been denied.

“We have been denying the falsehoods expressed, while Begoña has taken legal action so that these same digital media rectify what, we maintain, is spurious information,” the letter says.

For the Spanish president, both the complaint and the reaction of the main opposition leaders – Alberto Núñez Feijóo, of the conservative Popular Party, and Santiago Abascal, of the far-right Vox – are part of an “operation of harassment and demolition” by all the parties. avenues, including personal ones.

«I need to stop and reflect. I urgently need to answer the question of whether it is worth it, despite the mud into which the right and the extreme right try to turn politics. “If I should continue at the head of the Government or give up this high honor,” Sánchez insisted.

The answer to the question raised will be given on May 29, in an appearance before the media.
