A dispute opposes the president of the Region to the mayor RN of Beaucaire in the Gard about the request to build a high school in this city. The case is in the hands of justice. Carole Delga has decided to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
The President (PS) of the Occitanie region, Carole Delga, has decided to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. This decision follows his conviction for “discrimination” against Julien Sanchez, the mayor National Rally (RN) of Beaucaire (Gard) indicates Midi Libre which recalls the origin of the dispute. In 2016, the Occitanie Regional Council refused to sign the City Contract presented by this municipality led by Julien Sanchez. This Contract included the request for the construction of a high school in the town, an equipment that the regional council, but “also the prefecture and the Rectorate” deemed neither necessary nor relevant.
At first instance, the Nîmes court rejected Julien Sanchez’s request. But the Nimes Court of Appeal ruled the case differently, condemning President Delga to a fine of 1,000 euros for “discrimination by a person in charge of a public function against the town of Beaucaire”.
Carole Delga denounces the attitude of the mayor RN: “The far right, for lack of a regional project, has increased the number of lawsuits against me. It is a strategy of permanent instrumentalization of justice to deny the elected representative that I am in her capacity to act ”. The President therefore decides to refer the matter to the European Court of Human Rights “in the face of (a) political decision which poses a serious democratic question and which may, tomorrow, hinder the action of the representatives of the people”.
