The President of PES: Do not use the Bulgarians and Romanians as a bargaining chip! – 2024-09-30 05:49:25

/ world today news/ Stanishev and Corbyn agree on the rights of European citizens in the United Kingdom.

“I observe with concern the increased number of cases of violence and crimes against foreigners motivated by hatred and intolerance after the referendum in Great Britain. This is the result of virulent anti-immigrant rhetoric, irresponsible behavior and a never-ending stream of outright lies and manipulation. Apart from Nigel Farage’s party, for which Eastern Europeans and especially Bulgarians and Romanians are traditionally in the crosshairs, it seems that the ruling conservatives are also taking a similar course. It is unacceptable that the rights and lives of European citizens become a bargaining chip in the negotiations between the EU and Great Britain.”

This was shared by PES President Sergey Stanishev at a bilateral meeting with the leader of the British Labor Party, Jeremy Corbyn. The two are in Paris for the meeting of the leaders of the left parties in Europe, dedicated to the consequences of the British referendum and the future of the EU.

The reason for Stanishev’s comment is the statement of British Interior Minister Theresa May regarding citizens of European countries living in Great Britain. She said their residency status could be subject to negotiations with the EU. A similar position was expressed by another member of the Conservative Party – Foreign Minister Philip Hammond.

“Theresa May bid for the Tory leadership and the Prime Ministership, but made the wrong move. This is a bad start, both for her campaign and for the “divorce” process between the EU and the United Kingdom”, commented Stanishev.

For his part, Jeremy Corbyn assured Stanishev that Labor would do everything possible to protect the rights of both Europeans in Britain and British citizens living in other EU countries.

On Wednesday, the lower house of the British Parliament passed a resolution proposed by Labor that calls on the government to do everything possible to preserve the right of citizens of other European countries living on the Island to remain. The ruling Conservative Party did not take part in the vote, and the government does not intend to comply with it for the time being.

“We have seen where political games with the future of people at stake lead. Further fueling fears and insecurities will lead to more alienation, and the country needs unification. If the British really want to achieve the best for both their citizens living in the EU and European citizens on the Island, they must guarantee the rights of all of them to remain. The first gesture in this direction should come from Great Britain,” concluded Stanishev.
