The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, visited the resort of Acapulco, in the southern state of Guerrero, on Friday, amid protests and requests for help from victims of Hurricane John, which made landfall on September 23.

«We come to supervise how we are doing in the cleaning and reconstruction of all of Guerrero. It is better, obviously, but we need to support all the people,” the president said in statements to the media, outside the XII Naval Region.

This is the second visit of the Mexican ruler to the region, where she met with federal, state and municipal authorities, and took a tour of the Alejo Peralta neighborhood.

Regarding financial aid and household goods, he reiterated that first financial support for cleaning will be provided, which will correspond to 8,000 pesos (about $415) to each of the victims, and then the goods will be provided.

Given this, he specified that a census has been started in all the affected municipalities in the state.

Affected people blocked tourist road
In addition, he commented that they already have a mapping of all the damaged areas and neighborhoods, so all affected people will be attended to. “We are going to take care of them (…) we are going to be with them always,” said Sheinbaum.

Before arriving at the port, around 50 people affected by Hurricane Otis held a protest and blocked the coastal Miguel Alemán, the main road and tourist artery of the port of Acapulco, as they want to be counted.

The protesters mentioned that almost a year after the devastating Hurricane Otis, which destroyed the port last October, they are still affected, which worsened with the arrival of John last September, which is why they asked for financial support to rebuild their homes.
