President Haiti was shot dead at his home last night, caretaker Prime Minister Claude Joseph said. According to him, this happened during an attack by unknown perpetrators against the private home of the head of state.
Jovnel Moyes, an entrepreneur and 42nd president of the island nation, has died at the age of 53. His wife, Marten, was injured in the attack at around 1 am in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Prime Minister Joseph, who is taking office temporarily, said the attackers spoke Spanish. Haiti’s official languages are Creole and French, although parts of the population speak Spanish and English.
Moses’ election victory in November 2016 was marked by accusations of fraud, and there was a new wave of protests for his resignation in 2019.
