President The Savior Nayib Bukele exhibiting a new prison that is said to be the largest prison in the Americas, which is claimed to be able to accommodate up to 40,000 inmates. The super-large prison is devoted to detaining prisoners gangstermost of whom were arrested during the crime-fighting emergency.
As reported AFPWednesday (1/2/2023), Bukele did not specify when the first steps for the transfer of convicts would begin, of the nearly 63,000 gangsters currently detained by El Salvador’s authorities.
According to Bukele, gangsters detained by the previous administration had access to “prostitution, PlayStation, screens, mobile phones and computers” in other prisons.
But in the future, according to El Salvador’s Undersecretary of Justice Osiris Luna, those held in “Terrorism Detention Centers” will be forced to work.
Public Works Minister Romeo Rodriguez added that the giant prison complex built in a remote rural area near Tecoluca, which is 76 kilometers southeast of the capital San Salvador, has an area of 166 hectares.
“The largest prison in all of America,” Rodriguez claimed in his statement, referring to the gigantic prison.
The prison will be guarded by 600 soldiers and 250 police officers day and night.
Bukele posted to Twitter a video of himself visiting the giant prison complex in person.
