The president, who in 2023 became the youngest president to win an election in the history of Ecuador, took office in a country with the highest homicide rate in Latin America, a product of the rise of criminal violence, so at the beginning of 2024 elevated the fight against organized crime to the category of “internal armed conflict” and dictated a state of emergency.
