The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, today promulgated the Equal Marriage Law, approved and dispatched last Tuesday by the Chilean Congress.
The president signed the enactment at the end of a speech at the governmental Casa de La Moneda and stressed that “it is through marriage that two people come together in a common life project” and that this is a step towards a more tolerant society. .
Along these lines, Piñera recognized the organizations and individuals who fought to achieve this advance in the recognition of sexual diversity.
The new Equal Marriage Law was finalized last Tuesday, with approval by the Chamber of Deputies with a large majority of 82 votes in favor, 20 against and two abstentions.
“The Chamber supports in the last step the bill that regulates, under equal conditions, the marriage of same-sex couples. It is referred to the Executive for its enactment procedures, ”Deputies posted on Twitter.
Previously, the Senate had approved the report with 21 votes in favor, eight against and three abstentions, after resolving some discrepancies related to the issues of affiliation, labor rights and the update of the gender identity law, which did not contemplate that of equality marriage.

The Law contemplates granting same-sex couples each and every one of the duties and rights that heterosexual marriages currently enjoy.
Likewise, it guarantees that individuals are not discriminated against because of their sexual orientation and gender identity, for the purposes of child custody, filiation and adoption, whether or not the couples are united in marriage and whether or not they had had their children. by assisted human fertilization.

This initiative entered Congress four years ago, during the government of former President Michelle Bachelet.
