The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, intends to transfer funds from a region ruled by a political opponent to another administered by an ally, in a new sign of the growing political tension between the president and the opposition.

According to Bloomberg News, the president will transfer one percent of the allocations of the Federal Participation Fund from the opposition-controlled city of Buenos Aires to its regional counterpart, which is the largest in terms of population in the country.

These allocations amount to about 45 billion pesos (about 600 million dollars), over the course of this year and next.

The money will be used to calm police officers who staged a protest outside the presidential residence on Wednesday. To demand an increase in their salaries and the provision of better work equipment and health care.

Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kisilov, a prominent leader in Fernandez’s governing coalition, said Thursday that his government will increase the salary of hiring police officers to 44,000 pesos (588 US dollars) from the current 38,000.
