Abkhazia’s President Aslan Bzhania held an emergency meeting of the country’s Security Council related to mass protests in Sukhum, reports “Apsnypress”. The leader of the republic was told that the situation with protests was getting worse at this time, and that the actions of the demonstrators, who, among other things, blocked a republican road, “are of a criminal nature.”
The report explained that it all started after the arrest of four people who tried to attack the deputy speaker of the Abkhaz parliament after an extraordinary session.
According to the country’s general prosecutor Aghur AgrabaThe actions of those who attacked the deputy were accompanied by “obscene language.” Now they are in a pre-trial detention center. The prosecutor’s office is conducting a procedural review.
Protests began in Sukhum on November 11. According to local telegram channels, the reason was to keep opponents against the ratification of the investment agreement with Russia.
An agreement under which Russian companies can implement their investment projects in the region of the latter was signed by Russia and Abkhazia at the end of October. To enter into force, the document must be ratified by the Abkhaz parliament.
The protesters gathered near the building of the State Security Service, tried to raise the gates and block the Gumista bridge. Military equipment had to be brought to the building of the President of Abkhazia, RBC clarifies.
