There are three cities that reflect the United States of America in their culture and idiosyncrasy, and also American society as a whole: Washington, New York and Las Vegas.
Of the most important political capital in the world we can rescue many examples but above all, the unfinished construction of a rule of law that invites its practice within a democratic liberalism.
From the City of the Big Apple, enjoy the cultural, playful and theatrical space of a polarized society where poverty and wealth (Bronx-Manhattan) shine with splendor like the millions of light bulbs in Las Vegas.
That superfluous city that plays a certain amorphous, artificial and consumerist culture that enchants many and builds subjective imaginaries where the ephemeral and material are extinguished in slot machines.
This reflection on the visit of our president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the United Nations where he delivered a paradigmatic and specific message regarding two major problems that are present throughout the world in a substantive way: Corruption and poverty.
A message full of lights and clarity.
And it is these words that were echoed in the President’s speech because, as he points out, they are present issues that impede the growth and well-being of the peoples.
And it is not idle to point out that the countries with the most development and growth in the world in their corruption indicators are negligible.
Regarding well-being and progress, they are very high considering that they do not have politicians with accounts in the Cayman Islands, Panama or Swiss banks.
I celebrate that AMLO has raised his voice in the highest platform of the West in favor of the poor and those who have the least who suffer from corruption.
Those who live in poverty and extreme poverty and who must be treated as a government priority, since poverty is not born by explosion like the bing bang theory (explaining the universe), but by the actions of indolent governments in the face of the main causes of poverty. Poverty: Corruption and an Exemplary Education.
In Latin America and Mexico we lack an example and forceful actions for those who, under the protection of power, have taken advantage to maintain privileges without attacking the underlying problems with ethics and morals.
It is a shame that former presidents of the Republic such as Peña Nieto exile themselves for fear of justice and hundreds of their former officials are protected against arrest warrants for illicit enrichment and criminal association.
The President did well to raise his voice and ask the member countries of the UN to put an end to the corruption and poverty that have marginalized millions of people in the world.
He pointed out: “It is necessary that the most relevant organism of the international community wake up from its lethargy, and get out of the routine, of the formalism, to reform itself and to denounce and fight corruption in the world”, a reflection that I share and that many New Yorkers (especially those from Brooklyn), they would also share in New York, there is also a lot of poverty and corruption beyond the lights of Las Vegas.
