/ world today news/ Speech of the Head of State Rumen Radev at the inauguration ceremony for a second term as President of the Republic of Bulgaria
Dear Mr. Speaker of the National Assembly,
Dear Mr. Prime Minister,
Dear Madam Vice President,
Dear members of the Constitutional Court,
Dear Ministers and People’s Representatives,
Dear representatives of the judiciary,
Dear heads of state institutions,
Dear Mr. Chief of Defense
Dear Generals, Admirals, Officers, Sergeants and Soldiers,
Dear representatives of religious communities,
Your Excellencies,
Dear compatriots,
It was five years ago that I first formed the guard here in front of the cathedral and the eternal fire. I remember the faces of many of you, the eyes of the people who had come in the frosty January to support the first steps of hope for a New Bulgaria. Our hope was common and you entrusted it to me and Mrs. Yotova.
The first term was a grueling struggle, but you renewed the pact of trust from which we draw strength. Thank you for the support.
We devoted five years to the fight for legality and democracy. I called for and worked for unity, I was accused of being divisive. But your votes showed unequivocally that our society wants and needs to part with a part of the inherited past. We won with joint efforts, we brought the society out of apathy, we returned to the people fair elections, and to the parliament – the opportunity to reform the rejected management model, strengthen the state, fight corruption, and revive democratic institutions.
The people have spoken and today we know the principles around which we build our unity: those for legality, justice and enlightenment, for true European development of Bulgaria.
In the coming years, I will watch that the country does not deviate from the path. I will defend sovereignty, law, security and justice, because this is our long-term and irrevocable mission. Political change is only the first step, more tests await us and I hope our entire political generation of politicians realizes it. People confirmed the way. We are asked to lay it down.
And when we think that we have the hardest time, let us not forget that there are not many countries that have preserved their name, faith and language through the winds of history. If today Bulgaria is one of them, it is because our people have experienced and realized the need for the unity of sword, spirit and word. I am convinced that we can achieve our goals only if our society remains united in its will for real change and progress. I believe that the millennial “state of the spirit” is alive in Bulgaria and it will inspire and chart our way forward.
Dear compatriots,
At the beginning of the expired term, I stated that for me it is not important how long I will be president, but what kind of president I will be. This conviction motivated me even in the most difficult moments not to compromise with my principles and to stay on the side of the people. I will continue to be the president of all Bulgarian citizens, regardless of party affiliation, ethnicity and religion. To defend the rights, interests and dignity of my people.
I believe that together we will continue to build a free, democratic, prosperous and modern country.
Long live Bulgaria!
