The series is one of the winners of the extraordinary funding competition, to which the government allocated funds last year in support of the cultural sector threatened by the pandemic. It is created by a very strong team of professionals, the series has four screenwriters and three directors. Along with Guna Zariņa, the roles are played by Juris Bartkevičs, Raimonds Celms, Baiba Broka, Ligita Dēvica, Inga Tropa, Artūrs Skrastiņš and other popular actors.

The story of the film covers the period from the beginning of Emilia Benjamin’s magazine “Rest” to her death in Siberia. Each series depicts a significant stage in Benjamin’s life. Along with her, you can get to know the society of the 20s and 30s in all its glory, as well as a whole host of other legendary personalities – Anton Benjamins, Kārlis Skalbs, Jānis Ziemeļnieks, Jūlijs Lācis, Eižens Finkas and others.

The story of the film is included in six feature films and one documentary series. It is almost impossible to achieve such a goal in less than a year, moreover, in the conditions of a pandemic – admits producer Gints Grūbe, but it was made possible by the high professionalism of all involved, as well as good cooperation with Benjamins’ family.

There was also a benefit from the time of the pandemic, namely that it made it possible to film in a number of authentic places where historical activities took place that would not otherwise be so easily accessible.

“One part of the film’s action really takes place in the House of Fabians, or the popularly called Benjamin House, 12 Krišjāņa Barona Street, where we show, for example, how the Benjamins are gathering. “The beautiful stained glass, which depicts three sisters Simsons, one of whom is Emilija.

Many historical themes in the film resonate very strongly with today, admits Gints Grūbe – for example, questions about freedom of the press:

it is also a story about the relationship between the media and power, and about the way in which power tries to manipulate the media people. And those are as topical issues as they can be. ”

The film is a collaboration of three people, and they are Kristīne Želve, Andis Mizišs and Dāvis Sīmanis. Each worked on their own series, but the common setting was that they would not lift the main character on a pedestal, would not idealize it, but would show it in all its versatility.

Kristīne Želve reveals: “We tried to look at Emilia in a comprehensive way and also to see the moments when she is ready to compromise with the power that then comes back, or some moments when she is really involved in these tests with power, money, prestige. and respect is balanced on the limits of ethics or morality. “

Although each director tried to stir up his “ego” by creating a collaboration, some ideas that were important to everyone came to the fore from time to time. “Of course, this line of women, this line of emancipation and feminism was important to me. And it was interesting to see that my fellow men have some nuances, which I think are essential, that they don’t see them. Sometimes we went there – or! again you did it with your feminism!
