In his play “American Bison”, David Mamm depicts three petty swindlers who plan to steal an old coin collection, dreaming of a lucrative business, but do not expect their imaginary business model to be a test of their friendship. As one of the heroes says to his youngest friend, “There is business and there is friendship,” two worlds that, unfortunately, cannot always coexist.
The play was first staged in 1975 (winning the Drama Critics Association Award for Best American Play), and in 1977 reached Broadway. The comments were very positive, with many critics praising Mameta’s ability to capture the ambiguity of American daily speech. In 2002, David Mamet was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, and in 2010 he received the Grand Theater of America Award. His plays are still played on Broadway and all over the world.
The creative team of the show also includes set designer Mārtiņš Vilkārsis, costume designer Ilze Vītoliņa, lighting artist Gatis Priednieks – Melnacis, movement consultant Liene Stepena. Cast: Kārlis Freimanis, Aksels Aizkalns, Rūdis Bīviņš or Artis Jančevskis.
