In a recent meeting of the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (HMC), Vassilis Papastergiadis, with the Prime Minister of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, as well as members of parliament of Greek origin, he underlined the importance of the presence of the Prime Minister of Greece in Melbourne, the third largest Greek city in the world. “It is important to have representation from the Prime Minister of Greece here,” he said. “Please convey a personal message from me, along with a written invitation, for him to visit our beautiful city and state.”
In the debate, the Prime Minister emphasized the timeless bond of the Greek diaspora in Melbourne with Greece, a sentiment shared by the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who said: “The Greek diaspora in Melbourne as well as throughout Australia fills us with pride . They are our real ambassadors, and it is our duty to support them.” The Prime Minister noted Greece’s recent initiatives to strengthen this relationship, such as the imminent opening of an EOT office in the Melbourne Hellenic Community building and amendments allowing Greek citizens abroad to vote.
During the recent visit of Vassilis Papastergiadis to Greece, he met Prime Minister Mitsotakis at the Maximos Palace. The Prime Minister welcomed him warmly, saying: “Santa Claus, I am very glad to see you again. Welcome back to Greece.”
Vassilis Papastergiadis conveyed the message of the Premier of Victoria, replying: “Mr Prime Minister, I am here not only to convey the warmest wishes of our community, but also of the Premier of Victoria. I have with me a personal letter inviting you to visit Melbourne and Australia.’
The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude and excitement, replying: “It is one of my priorities to visit Melbourne and Australia. I thank Prime Minister Allan for this kind invitation.” He reaffirmed his commitment to support the Greek diaspora and stated, “I am excited and will accept this invitation.”
