The Premier Match of the Nike League and the Future of the Košice Football Arena

The premier match of the Nike League will be hosted soon. From next year, the Slovak national football team should also play in it. The national team would thus present itself in the east of the republic after a long pause.

The Košice football arena has been in operation since February 2022. The matches can be watched from the two main stands along the pitch. At present, everything is progressing by leaps and bounds towards the complete completion of the stadium. This means also with the stands behind the gates and connecting ovals.

When this happens, the stadium will receive a certificate of the highest possible category UEFA 4. This means that it will be able to host international matches. Including the 2025 European Championships for under-21 players, which were awarded to eight Slovak cities, including Košice, at the beginning of this year.

It already has an effect. The wind speed is lower

“In the first stage, the foundations were made – reinforced concrete footings, which are placed on piles. For this, at this stage, prefabricated reinforced concrete skeletons began to be assembled, and reinforced concrete benches are further placed on this supporting system. There are twenty rows. Access to these areas is through vomitoriums, which are actually entrances. Each grandstand has three entrances with a staircase,” explained for ŠPORT.sk Milan Vaska, construction supervisor responsible for the completion of the KFA.

The grandstands behind the gates marked B and D are practically finished in terms of gross construction, the corners still remain. Those should be ready by the end of next week. Water and sewage connections were built into the spaces under the stands.

Although the completion is not yet complete, in the current phase it is also important for football players from a practical point of view. Closing the stadium significantly reduced the wind on the field.

What does the next schedule look like?

“The steel structure should be ready by the end of September. This will be followed by cladding with a facade sheet. That could happen in October. The overall completion of construction works is planned at the turn of the year, or in January,” approached Vaska.

Currently, there will still be public procurement for two above-limit orders, namely end elements and seats. Their installation could start in December, some things can be implemented simultaneously with the ongoing construction.

“After completion, the stadium will be fully functional. We expect approval to take place in March 2024,” said Vaska.

“The stadium with a full capacity of 12,658 seats could be played during April. At the beginning of May, we will host the final of the Slovnaft Cup. In preparation for the 2024/25 season, a grand opening of the stadium could take place, to which an interesting opponent would be invited.” outlined KFA General Manager Peter Schmiedl.

FC Košice, which is a newcomer to the Niké League, will play its opening home match in the top competition on Saturday, July 29. The opponent of Košice will be defending champion Slovan Bratislava.

By that time, KFA will already have one attractive duel behind them. Four days before this meeting (Tuesday, July 25), it will host the opening match of the 2nd preliminary round of the Champions League SC Dnipro-1 – Panathinaikos Athens.

news-item-description">It is not yet known whether Slovan Bratislava will continue in the 2nd preliminary round of the Champions League. For that to happen, they must first overcome the initial hurdle in the form of Luxembourg champions FC Swift Hesperange. It is already certain that the second preliminary round of the most prestigious club competition in Europe will be played in Slovakia. And that at the opposite end of the republic.

The price of the new football stadium in Košice should be up to 25 million euros.

Four million is a subsidy through the Slovak Football Association. The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic contributed the same amount to the completion. The Košice football arena took out a loan of 2.6 million euros for this purpose.

The city government has the largest share of funding. In her case, it is an amount at the level of 13 million euros.
