The Premier League’s High-Stakes Call for TV Rights Tenders: Will They Succeed?

In October, the management of the Premier League launched its consultation concerning the marketing of its national TV rights for the 2025-29 cycle. While the main managers of English clubs are tight-lipped about the financial objectives targeted, the Premier League Board has sought to protect itself against a potential decline by carrying out redevelopments of its lots. Decryption.

Who wants to pay billions? This is the question that the Premier League will have to answer via the launch of its consultation of domestic TV rights for the period 2025-29. And the context is not very favorable. Elsewhere, in Europe, the main leagues have recently failed to meet their TV revenue targets.

Initially aiming for a sum of around €1.44 billion per financial year, Serie A finally decided to market its domestic rights to the tune of… €900 million per season for the period 2024-29! Or at an amount… slightly lower than the previous cycle even if bonuses were negotiated with DAZN, the main rights holder.

In France, while a target of €825 million per financial year had been set by the Professional Football League, the call for tenders ultimately proved unsuccessful concerning the marketing of domestic TV rights to Ligue 1 for the 5 next seasons. None of the 5 lots placed on the market received an offer at the floor price. The LFP is now engaged in direct discussions with the various interested operators to try to get as close as possible to its financial objective.

The Premier League has redeveloped its lots to reduce risks

Concerning the Premier League, the stakes are high. Having not carried out a call for tenders to sell its domestic TV rights for the period 2022-25 – it had benefited from authorization from Boris Johnson’s government to extend its agreements with Sky, BT Sport (which has since become TNT Sports ) and Amazon without consultation – the Premier League then managed to secure a check for £5 billion (€5.7 billion) over this 3-year cycle.

While the Premier League has long benefited from intense competition between broadcasters in its market to maintain vigorous growth in its TV rights – the peak having been reached during the strong rivalry between Sky and BT Sportfootball leaders English are aware that this consultation does not present itself under the best auspices.
