Indonesian Travelers Eye Malaysia as Top Destination in 2024
Indonesia is experiencing a surge in international travel, with experts predicting over 7 million citizens venturing overseas by 2024. This growth is driven by pent-up demand after the pandemic and a renewed desire for exploration.
"The number of foreign tourists traveling is still lower than the same period before the pandemic, which is January-October 2019, but this is the highest level in the last five years," remarked an expert.
Leading the pack for popular destinations is Malaysia, a Southeast Asian jewel that is attracting a significant number of Indonesian travelers.
The allure of Malaysia is not new. "Malaysia is the most popular destination for foreign tourists in October 2024 (29.55 percent) followed by Saudi Arabia (15.91 percent), Singapore (13.80 percent) and China (5.98 percent)," according to recent data.
This trend was consistent throughout 2023 as well. "During this year, Malaysia has been actively inviting tourists to come to her country, among other things by carrying out the Visit 2024 campaign in Melaka, Kelantan, Perak and Perlis," highlighting the country’s efforts to attract Indonesian visitors.
Tourism Malaysia recognizes the significant role Indonesian travelers play. In a statement, they stressed the importance of the Indonesian market, saying, "Indonesia remains an important market for Malaysia. Daily flights from Jakarta also play a role in revitalizing the travel industry while improving relations between the two countries."
The reciprocal relationship extends to Indonesians welcoming Malaysian tourists as well. Malaysia is the top source of incoming tourists for Indonesia, accounting for a significant 16.26% of foreign visitors in October 2024.
This thriving tourism exchange highlights the strong cultural ties and geographical proximity between Indonesia and Malaysia. As travel continues to rebound, it’s clear that Malaysia will continue to be a favored destination for adventurous Indonesian travelers.
