the prefect of Isère threatens to take legal action

On the eve of the municipal council during which the authorization to wear the burkini in the city’s swimming pools must be debated, the State warns the mayor of Grenoble, Eric Piolle. The prefect of Isère warns that, in accordance with the instructions of the Minister of the Interior, he will take legal action if the deliberation is adopted.

The pressure goes up a notch as the debate on the wearing of the burkini approaches during the Grenoble city council, scheduled for Monday, May 16. This Sunday evening, it is the State which warns the mayor Eric Piolle via a press release from the prefect of Isère, Laurent Prévost.

This deliberation, whose manifest objective is to give in to communitarian and religious demands, seems to contravene the principle of secularism.

In this press release published this Sunday evening, the representative of the State affirms that “this deliberation, whose manifest objective is to give in to communitarian and religious demands, appears to contravene the principle of secularism laid down by the law of 1905 as well as the provisions of the law of August 24, 2021 confirming respect for the principles of Republic” and remember that “the mayor, if he must guarantee the religious freedom of his constituents, must also ensure that these rules are respected”.

The Prefect of Isère therefore warns Eric Piolle and warns him that “in accordance with the instructions he received from the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, he will seize the administrative court of Grenoble in the event of adoption of this deliberation by means of a secularism summary with a view to obtaining its suspension, in addition to the annulment referral”.

The Grenoble city council, during which this deliberation authorizing the wearing of the burkini in the city’s swimming pools will be debated, is scheduled for Monday, May 16 from 3:00 p.m.
