The Power of Jumbo-Visma: Dominance Continues in the Vuelta a Espana 2023

Always them, only them! The sixth stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2023 does nothing but confirm something we had already seen at the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France: the power of the Jumbo-Visma. The hornets, so renamed for their yellow and black uniform, give a first show of strength also in Spain, on Pico del Buitre, finding a semi-perfect day. There is no 10 just because Sepp Kuss misses the link with the Roja shirt, which ends up in the hands of the very young – and very talented – Lenny Martinez. The Frenchman and the American, together with 40 other athletes, make a void thanks to the right escape and then humiliate each other on the final climb: the native of Durango takes the fraction (and returns to celebrate after two years), while the transalpine “restrict” to the leader’s jersey. He is the youngest ever to wear it, even surpassing the record of Rey Miguelon Indurain. The parade from the shoulders of the golden boy Remco Evenepoel, who suffers a very small crisis and is detached from the company of the ring: Roglic, Vingegaard, Ayuso, Almeida, Mas and the other baby Uijtdebroeks. The Belgian still remains the first of the big names in the standings, but now all the others are back within a stone’s throw.

The chronicle of the stage

The one starting from La Vall d’Uixó is a very delicate stage: you pedal from the sea to the Javalambre Astrofísico Observatory, with 183.5km and over 4000 meters of climbing. In short, a day for climbers, after two stages dedicated to fast wheels. The departure is the classic one, or “at full speed”, with several cyclists trying to break away. The first attempt was by Thomas De Gendt (Lotto), Diego Andrés Camargo (EF) and Rui Costa (Intermarché), but after a few kilometers the three were caught again. Same script a few minutes later, on the GPM of Puerto de Arenillas (5.8km at 4.7%): 10 of them escape, but the peloton reabsorbs them right at the summit.

Down from the descent things get more serious, around -120 from the finish. An exaggerated squad emerges from the group, made up of 43 athletes. Inside there are many prominent names such as Kuss, Valter, Tratnik, van Baarle (Jumbo-Visma), Soler (UAE), Landa, Buitrago, Poels (Bahrain), Storer, Molard (FDJ) Van Den Berg, Carthy (EF) , Castroviejo (Ineos), Lopez (Trek), Buchmann, Kämna (Bora), Engelhardt (Jayco), Moniquet, Van Eetvelt, Kron (Lotto), Bardet (dsm), Van Poppel, Rui Costa (Intermarche), Bouchard, Prodhomme , Godon (AG2R), Vervaeke, Cattaneo (Quick-Step), Rubio, Lazkano (Movistar), Cimolai, Fernandez, Rochas (Cofidis), Rodriguez (Arkéa), Cras, Doubey, Ourselin (TotalEnergies), De La Cruz, Romo (Astana), Barcelo Aragon, Barrenetxea and Cepeda (Caja Rural), but above all Lenny Martinez (FDJ), third in the general standings just 17″ from Remco Evenepoel.

The peloton was blown away by this move, and on the ramps of Alto Fuente de Rubielos (6.1km at 6.2%), today’s second GPM, accumulated up to seven minutes behind. It’s a pretty big hole that is materializing, which among other things would allow Martinez to wear the leader’s jersey with a very good advantage over the other big names in the circus. At -70, when the road moves towards Aragon, the group decides that enough is enough: this situation cannot continue. Quick-Step, Movistar and Ineos therefore immediately take the lead in shooting, taking a couple of minutes off the pacesetters. Another couple of minutes slip away in the next 50km, with the gap settling at 3’30” at the foot of the last climb, the one that leads to the Javalambre Astrofísico Observatory: Pico del Buitre (10.9km at 8 % of average slope).
