University of Cambridge professor and molecular geneticist Professor Giles Yu explains that if a person eats a small breakfast and a large dinner, he destroys his diet, because his body will not have time to burn the calories he eats, advising that snacks be eaten at dinner time before he eats Your metabolism slows down while you sleep.

Big breakfast and small lunch and dinner

According to Professor Yu, you should eat a large breakfast that supports the body throughout the day, then a small lunch and even a smaller dinner, because during the day the metabolism is more active and will burn more calories than in the evening when it slows down to help conserve energy.

Higher metabolism

“Metabolism is at its highest during the day, while it is at its lowest at night, during sleep,” Professor Yu said, explaining that if the largest meal is eaten at night and two hours later you go to sleep, the body will keep the calories in storage mode. Whereas if the largest meal is eaten during the day, there will be room for the rest of the day to burn its calories.

Reduce the feeling of hunger

Professor Yu also referred to a study conducted by Professor Alexandra Johnston at the University of Aberdeen, in which a group of subjects were fed the same amount of calories every day for a period of time at breakfast while participants in a placebo group got the same amount of calories at dinner.

“It turns out that the difference is that if a person eats more calories at breakfast, they feel less hungry during the day, compared to if they eat more at dinner. So, if a person eats exactly the same foods, at breakfast and dinner or “At dinner and lunch, it’s realistically no effect. But for some, it can be much easier to eat a big breakfast because it means they feel less hungry throughout the day.”

The priority is the quality of health

Professor Yu pointed out that you should always prioritize good health and should only eat “when one is hungry”, as eating a large meal in the morning may not be suitable for people with busy work schedules with varying shifts. Still, NHS England recommends 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 calories for men.
