For Ecclestone, Putin is considered a “first class person”. In the Moscow-Kiev war, he criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for not doing more to prevent the war.
Ecclestone, who ran F1 for 40 years before leaving his role as chief executive in 2017, spoke of his continued admiration for Putin in an appearance at the event “Good Morning Britain” ITV on Thursday (30/6/2022).
When asked by the presenter if he still stands by the Russian leader, a man he often describes as a friend, Ecclestone replied: “I’d still take the bullet for him.”
“I’d rather it didn’t hurt, but if it did, I’d still take the bullet. Because he’s first class. And what he did was something he believed was the right thing for Russia.”

Ecclestone argued that the conflict in Ukraine was still a “mistake”. “You have to do the best you can to get out of it,” he said.
The 91-year-old British businessman later blamed Ukrainian President Zelensky for not doing more to prevent war, suggesting the leader was better suited to his previous roles as an actor and comedian.
“Other people in Ukraine, his profession I understand used to be a comedian and I think it looks like he wants to continue that profession, because I think if he thinks of something, he will definitely go out of his way to talk to Putin, who is a wise man, and will listen to it and maybe do something about it,” Ecclestone said.
