The Potential of AI in Astronomy: Using Technology to Study the Stars and Beyond

When hearing the term Astronomy, what ordinary people usually think of first is an Astronaut going to the moon, but the two things are different. Astronomy is a field that studies the Solar System, Star Physics, and Galaxies and Cosmology.

Astronomy does have a few enthusiasts in Indonesia due to the needs of a country that tends to still focus on development, therefore focusing on this field for its needs will not have a big impact, even so, there are not a few who just have a hobby in this field, especially since this field is not available in Southeast Asian countries besides Indonesia, even having its own Observatory gives Indonesia more opportunities to take steps in the field of science.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the current era is having an extraordinary period of development with the help of systems to facilitate human work in almost all fields including Astronomy.

At agencies like NASA the use of AI in space ships has begun to be carried out in order to study things that are outside this planet with conditions that are quite dangerous if humans do it directly with exposure to UV light or strong electromagnetic waves out there, AI has proven he is especially good at identifying visible objects like galaxies or exoplanets that astronomers have asked him to look for. But it is also powerful enough to find objects or phenomena that are theorized but have not yet been found in the real world.

In its use on land, AI can also be used to assist humans in making their observations from the observatory by calculating the earth’s rotation so that the object being observed is easily focused on the rain sensor to automatically close the dome.

After seeing the many potentials of AI being used in the field of Astronomy, it is clear that this can also provide many positive things to the field of Astronomy in the country, such as the state agency LAPAN which in the implementation of AI allows it to be used in satellites for Geospatial (earth space) which can later be useful for making city structures and roads with examples used in the ongoing construction of a new capital city, natural resource mapping (Natural Resources), as well as being utilized in the fields of Atmospheric, Climate and Space Sciences.
