Some mothers are wondering about the possibility of allowing children to drink tea with milk alongside their breakfast, for fear that it will have negative effects on their health.

In this regard, Dr. Amir Suleiman, a consultant pediatrician and neonatologist, said that it is better for the child to drink tea and milk separately, because consuming the two at the same time does not bring any benefits to his health.
Suleiman explained that the body faces great difficulty in absorbing the nutrients found in milk and tea when consumed together, which makes it a useless drink for children.
Some research has revealed that milk proteins interfere with the body’s ability to absorb the antioxidant compounds in tea, according to Healthline.

The neonatology consultant recommended that mothers not offer tea to children, if they are under 12 years old, because caffeine consumption at this age negatively affects their health.

He pointed out that “one cup” is the permissible amount of tea for children per day, because excessive tea exposes them to dehydration, insomnia and caffeine sensitivity.

Suleiman warned mothers not to offer tea to children immediately after meals, because drinking it after meals increases the risk of anemia, due to its reduction in the body’s ability to absorb iron.

He emphasized that green tea is better than black tea for children, and the reason is due to its richness in antioxidants that help strengthen their immune system and reduce their risk of chronic diseases, in addition to its low caffeine content.
