Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Tech giant Microsoft warns against the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) on the title 2024 Election. One of them is the use of AI which can make disinformation rampant.
Panji Wasmana, National Technology Officer for Microsoft Indonesia, revealed that AI could be used for “bad purposes” such as generating disinformation during the 2024 elections.
“If you use some tools like llm (large language models), search engine or whatever, try typing who the presidential winner is, how to become president in 2024, information will come out. And it will be easy for us to carry out disinformation in it. “That could possibly happen by using AI technology,” said Panji at the Microsoft Indonesia office, Jakarta, Wednesday (18/10).
“We can use AI technology to targeted campaign even,” he added.
Therefore, according to Panji, people must be smart in sorting and selecting the information they receive. They must also be wise in not immediately trusting information spread on social media.
Panji said that it is wise to receive information by not only reading one paragraph, but also looking at the source.
He also revealed that the use of AI is like a double-edged sword. The reason is, this technology is also said to be able to eradicate hoaxes that spread on social media.
“I also recommend using AI to eradicate hoaxes. That’s actually something that has been done a lot recently. And if you look at it many years ago, AI had already been implemented.deploy “to cluster movements from social media, look at trends, temperatures on social media related to politics, and that’s what happened,” he explained.
“So if we look at this as two blades, once again it is very important to see the use of AI as two inseparable and responsible parts,” added Panji.
Need regulations
In general, Panji emphasized that the development of AI technology also needs to be balanced with appropriate regulations. Currently, in Indonesia there are no clear regulations regarding the use and utilization of AI.
Panji then reflected on the strict regulations in the United States regarding AI. Recently, US President Joe Biden invited AI development technology companies to sign the White House Voluntary AI Commitments.
“They invited several big player like us, Microsoft, and other industries that are involved in AI development and we are committed that all AI technology must be safe, secureand trustworthy,” he said.
According to him, the existence of regulations is important to ensure that AI technology runs in the right corridor.
“If we don’t regulate it and don’t have it framework to ensure that the AI that is developed securethen it will be a disaster,” explained Panji.
Promise to organize campaigns using AI
Previously, the Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi emphasized that he would organize political party campaigns in cyberspace involving artificial intelligence, aka AI.
“Later we will review it, we will make good arrangements,” said Budi Arie.
Budi admitted that his party would still comprehensively review election regulations regarding which campaign methods are allowed in cyberspace.
“One by one first. Let’s see which ones are legally allowed and which ones are not allowed,” he said.
Meanwhile, in general, Kominfo does not want to rush into making regulations prohibiting the use of generative AI as other countries have done. Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria said that currently his party is still looking at many aspects of the use of AI.
“What we are looking at now is actually many aspects, including the use of AI for the economy for example, then to accelerate the dissemination of positive information. Then we also look at AI for industrial purposes and the like. So it’s quite broad,” said Nezar.
“So we’re trying to map it all out. The regulations we’ve been fearing will limit the development of AI, I don’t think we’ve gotten there yet,” he added.
