Finding the post office book that is worth € 300,000 could really change your life. How to do? Well, actually, you should be hoping that someone in your family … forgot they got it. The postal passbook is in fact one of the most popular saving methods some time ago, even if it still retains a certain diffusion today.
There are a couple of news from recent years in which reference is made to the postal book which is worth € 300,000. In both cases there is talk of “discoveries” in family memories. Investments made shortly after the Second World War which proved to be very fruitful due to the very long deposit times. The Italian Post Office, however, has run for cover, and have introduced limits. Let’s try to understand better what we are talking about.
The postal book which is worth € 300,000
As we have mentioned, there are two recent cases found in the local news, of a postal booklet that has come to be worth around € 300,000. We are talking about the discovery in the province of Lecce of a postal booklet for 250 thousand lire deposited in 1958, and that of another pensioner from Casoni di Luzzara, in the Modena area, with 600 lire deposited in 1949. Both booklets actually arrive, with the calculation of interest, to sums close to 300 thousand euros.
This news is often “provided” to newspapers by law firms that deal with the collection of sums. In fact, the Post Office considers these investments “dormant” and therefore prescribed, which can no longer be requested. Generally the judicial process is long, but getting to track down your sum is not impossible.
Postal book: here’s which one to look for
If you know of a post office book hidden in the family savings, it is probably worth going to update on the status of the investment. The laws have changed in recent years and provide greater protection for the depositary institution in the event of “forgetfulness” of the saver. In addition, the interest on the postal passbooks is currently at an all-time low.
Currently, postal books do not have a real expiry date but a sort of investment freeze in the face of a lack of handling. This means that the sum is put “on pause” if a booklet is not moved for 10 years or if they have a balance of less than 100 euros. Poste Italiane provides a specific section of its site to check the status of the “dormant booklets”. Having a book that has been dormant for a very long time today represents more of a risk than a huge earning opportunity.
